Divine
Mercy Sunday
The Sunday after Easter is celebrated throughout the
Catholic Church worldwide as Divine Mercy Sunday. We recognize, celebrate and give thanks for
the endless mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mercy is the thread that runs through Jesus’ entire ministry. Mercy for sinners, the blind; the lame; the
sick. Even mercy for those who mocked,
blasphemed and crucified Him. Rather than
seeking vengeance upon them, He offered His mercy from the cross, “Father, forgive them, they know not what
they do.” (Luke 23: 34)
When Peter asked if he should forgive his brother seven
times, Jesus replied, “I say to you, not seven
times but seventy-seven times.” (Matt 18: 22) His forgiveness is unlimited for those who
seek it.
As a way for us to participate in His great mercy our
Priest offered the following: “For any hurt I have caused you over the years,
forgive me.” Spouse to spouse, parent to
children, children to parent, we can all respond with mercy and forgiveness. Jesus would do no less.
May the mercy of our Lord be with you and may you share
that mercy with others in all you do.
