Conversion
“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
(Acts 9: 5)”
The conversion
of Saul of Tarsus is probably the most well-known conversion story of all time. Saul, the greatest persecutor of the early
Christian Church, became Paul, the great apostle to the gentiles. His conversion story is proof that even the
most evil among us can become sons and daughters of God. It offers hope where hope is sorely needed.
Most of us
probably know someone who has had a conversion experience. Some may have been dramatic and others more
subtle but they all represent a change in the hearts of those converted; a
desire for heavenly treasure rather than earthly.
Even those
who have been raised in Christian ways need conversion. A some point a decision must be made to
follow God or follow the world. Being
raised in a Christian home may provide a better path and encourage our own
conversion but there is still the need to choose that path.
For those of
us who were raised without faith the conversion experience can be
revolutionary. A life without true hope
and love can become one centered on love of God and love of others. A devotion to the riches and desires of the
world can be transformed into the search for heavenly treasures.
Saul’s
conversion shows us that anyone, regardless of their prior life, can become
great in their faith. God waits with
open arms, love and mercy to accept those who turn to Him. While we may never experience a conversion as
traumatic as Paul’s we too need conversion in our lives if we are to become
part of God’s family.
“And immediately something like
scales fell from his eyes and he regained his site.” (Acts 9: 18)
