The Psalms

When troubled we need to turn to God.  If we are unsure of how to proceed we need to ask Him.  If we are facing difficulties we need to rely on His strength.  In each of these situations the place to turn is scripture and prayer.  The help we need and the answers to our questions can be found in the prayerful contemplation of God’s word.

The book of Psalms is one of my favorite places to find God.  There are one hundred and fifty offerings of faith and wisdom to draw from.  In the Psalms I find strength, calm, trust and love for God.

When it seems nothing is going your way and the world is against you go to the 3rd Psalm and read of David’s trust in God in the face of adversity.

In the 8th we read of how the God of Majesty gives dignity to mankind by giving us dominion over His creation.  He has made us little less than the angels.

Consider Psalm 22.  It begins with the words Jesus repeated from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.” (Matt 27: 46).  The rest of the Psalm is very much a description of the life and Passion of our Lord.

As sinners, Psalm 51 is very important to us.  It begins with, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your merciful love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.” (Psalm 51: 1).  What a perfect way to begin to ask for God’s forgiveness for our sins.

My favorite is Psalm 139.  The glory of God, His omnipotent presence and majesty are so wonderfully declared.

The last Psalm, 150, is a beautiful song of praise for our God.

There is great wisdom, strength and help in the Psalms.  Turn to them and they will add tremendously to your faith and love for God.
