Hearts of Flesh

“From their bodies I will remove the hearts of stone, and give them hearts of flesh, so that they can walk according to my statutes, taking care to keep my ordinances.” (Ezekiel 11: 19 – 20)

God’s laws are written on our hearts.  Whether we admit it or not we have within us His guidance and direction.  We can reject it, even deny that it exists, but it is there.

In discussions with atheists I’ve often asked them why, if there is no God, don’t we live a life of pure selfishness.  Why do we not just push away or even kill those who stand in our way?  Their answer is usually a little confused since they are trying to explain good and evil while still denying God.  When I ask where their knowledge of good and evil comes from if not from God they have no answer.

God has given us a wonderful gift by implanting His laws within us.  Without being told we know that some things are just wrong.  We don’t need a law to tell us killing another is wrong or that robbing a bank is wrong.  Even in our sexually over-charged society we still know that promiscuity, infidelity and adultery are wrong, even though many refuse to admit it.

Until we accept God’s laws within us, realizing that they are what bring us happiness we will continue to fight against them.  Without them we can’t find peace in this world or joy and happiness in the world to come.

We too often struggle against You.
We know Your ways but refuse them.
We want our own way.
Help us know and accept Your way.

Amen
