Keeping in Touch with God
I spent some time this morning preparing Christmas cards for
the mail. It occurred to me that, in some
cases, these were people I’ve not spoken to for years. We exchange Christmas cards but have very
little, if any, other contact. It seemed
kind of sad to me.
For some their friendship with God isn’t
much different. Some rarely, if ever, talk
to Him. Many go to church on Sunday and
never think of Him again until next Sunday.
If we could send cards to God would that be the extent of our
communication with Him?
This is the time of year when most have at least a passing thought
of God; after all it is nearing Christmas.
But even then the attention seems to be more toward our earthly gods,
the presents, the decorations, and yes, the cards we send.
Many will invite friends and family into their homes this
time of year. We sit and talk, have a
meal and maybe some drinks. We may even
watch a ballgame or two in the name of friendship and comradery.
I wonder how many will invite God into their homes to visit
and talk with Him. Do we even want to
hear what He has to say to us? I think
some don’t speak with God because they fear what He might ask of them. He might want them to do something their friends
might find odd or “hyper” religious.
God is our greatest friend.
Yes, He may ask something of us that we find difficult or even something
we really don’t want to do. But if He
asks He will help us do what He asks. He
asks of us those things that will help us grow to know Him, and ourselves,
better. What He asks of us will make us
a better person, perhaps even bringing us to holiness.
Especially during this season let’s keep in touch with God. Better yet, let’s keep in touch with Him for the rest of our life.
Father, we
sometimes ignore You.
Yet you never
ignore us.
Your love
is always with us.
Increase our love of You.
Amen
