 The Greatest Love

I think we too often look at scripture as history.  It does give a history of God’s chosen people, the coming of our Lord and His life, death, and resurrection but it is so much more than a history lesson.

As history, it’s incomplete and very poorly written.  Long periods of time are barely touched upon or ignored completely.  From His birth we hear nothing more of Jesus until He is twelve years old, and then nothing again until He began His ministry at about the age of thirty.  St. John clearly states that much of what Jesus did was not recorded (see John 20: 30 - 31).

Scripture is also a lesson in how we are to live our lives.  The bliss of Eden lost because of sin.  What was intended to be an eternal loving relationship with God was destroyed.  In our life as well, sin can rob us of eternal happiness with God.

We see the inconsistency of the Israelites in their worship and obedience to the Father.  Over and over they abandoned right worship for worldly pleasure and gods.  We do the same today.  The lures of earthly pleasure and riches become gods to us, pushing out the one true God.

Above all scripture is a love story.  The love of God for you and me.  Over and over He has had good reason to abandon us, return us to dust and start over.  Yet over and over God has chosen to forgive and give us another chance.  For our sake God sent His only Son to die for us, to again offer us salvation and eternal happiness.  By His passion and death Jesus paid the price for our sins.

Scripture is many things, history, poetry, lessons for life.  Above all else it is the greatest love story ever told.

Father Your love is eternal.

We too often turn from You

In this season of love and sharing.

Help us to seek Your love above all.

Amen
