His Endless Love
“Save us, O
Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to
your holy name and glory in your praise (Ps. 106: 47)”
Psalm 106 recounts the many sins Israel had committed against
the Lord. In their exodus through the
desert they worshiped a golden calf and repeatedly complained against God and
Moses. Once they arrived in the promised
land they continued to sin, worshiping other gods and refused to give to God the
honor and praise He was due.
Yet the Lord
remained with His chosen people. He
never deserted them, and when the time was right, He sent Jesus as their Messiah. Still the Israelites refused to accept God
and His many blessings, crucifying the Messiah sent for their salvation.
In our day we could also write a psalm listing all the ways
we have refused to honor God, the many sins we’ve committed. We’ve turned from Him, worshiping the gods of
pride, envy, money, sex and others. Many horrors have been committed against one
another because of the false gods we serve.
The sins we commit are many and sorrow for those sins is rarely seen.
Still, God has not abandoned us. He waits patiently for us to come to Him and showers
us with mercy and forgiveness when we do.
He will lead us to Him, but we often run away, seeking our own way rather
than His. Just as a child may abandon his
family, many reject the family of God. Yet even
those who run away are welcomed back if they wish to come home.
There is only one thing can explain God’s determination to
help us; His desire to make us His, members of His family. It is the same reason that His Son came to pay the price for our sins, opening the doors to heaven for those who
would follow Him. That explanation is the
total and unending love that God has for each of us.
Lord, we’ve
done so much to disappoint You.
We’ve
turned from You in our many sins.
Still, You
offer love, mercy and forgiveness.
Help us
find our way home.
Amen
