Points of
Light
Several years ago President George H.W. Bush spoke of a thousand points of
light. He was referring to those people
who do good and help to build our country into a country worthy of God’s
blessings. Yet there is a danger in the
concept of the thousand points of light.
We may begin to think that we are the source of that light.
It’s human nature to be prideful, to take credit where no
credit is due. When we become convinced
that we are one of those points of light we are on very thin spiritual ice; we
are in danger of believing that the light is from us. We come to think that we are the source of the
light. But Christ alone is its’ source,
we can only share what we have received from Him.
If we stand before a mirror we see a reflection of
ourselves. It looks real even though it
isn’t. Turn out the light and our
reflection will disappear; it no long exists.
In the same way, without the light of Christ we cannot be a point of
light. Our light is within us only
because the Lord has given it to us.
We are intended to be points of light in a broken world. But to do so we must acknowledge that the
light we share isn’t ours but that of Christ.
He is the true light; we are only the reflection.
Lord You
are the light of the world.
We are
merely a reflection.
Help us to
share the light You give.
May Your
light shine upon us forever.
Amen
