Society in
Crisis
“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” (Gen
2: 18)
God’s people are a people of family, a society made up of
those who love one another and God. There is a need for companionship and
community within us. Without interaction
with others society as we know it is at risk.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we can longer join each other in
worship, friendship, and community.
Social distancing keeps us from visiting family and friends. People are suffering and dying alone because
hospitals and assisted living homes have prohibited visitation. Priests are forbidden to even administer Last
Rites to those near death. In a nation
whose constitution enshrines religious liberty the right to practice religion has
been declared unlawful.
I understand that this pandemic is an unknown and perhaps
required some unusual actions. Most of
our leaders have tried to reasonably protect us from the virus, but others have
taken this crisis as an opportunity to grasp ultimate power, creating a
near-military state; one a free nation and people should never have to
endure. Normal human behavior has been
criminalized in the name of safety.
In the history of the world there have been several pandemics,
many affecting and killing far more that Covid-19. This crisis too will pass; the pandemic will
come to an end. The question is how will
it have changed our way of life? Just as
important, will those who have had a taste of near ultimate power willingly
relinquish it?
I respect those who are sincerely trying to keep us safe, but
I pray that God will protect us from those who would protect us from ourselves
and from our God.
Lord, we
turn to You in this difficult time.
Strengthen
us is this crisis.
Give our
leaders the wisdom to lead.
Give them
the humility to lead properly.
Amen
