A Society at Risk
“For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in
Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the
day of judgement than for you.” (Matt 11: 23 – 24)
Each morning for the last several months I’ve included a snippet
of wisdom from St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta in my morning readings. Her life and how she dedicated it to helping
the poorest of the poor is well-known throughout the world.
But I wonder if it would be so well-know if she had lived in
this country. It seems we don’t do a
very good job of recognizing the people who live their lives striving to do
good, loving God and all His children. To our shame I suspect Mother Teresa would have
been pretty much ignored. Instead of
seeking out the good, we glorify the evil, in our news, our entertainment, and
in many ways in our own lives.
Boys Town was founded over 100 hundred years ago and has
helped thousands of children and families, continuing to this day. I doubt there are many who even know it
exists and even fewer who support it. Across
this nation there is a multitude of people who give of their time, talents, and
money to help others. Soup kitchens,
food banks, homeless shelters, free medical clinics, free mental health
services and many other charity activities abound but are rarely recognized.
I fear that our society is destined to failure unless we begin recognizing and supporting the good, denouncing the evil for what it is rather than glorifying it. A society that refuses to seek, honor, and encourage the good within it cannot long survive.
All we see
is the evil in our world.
A society
in love with evil cannot survive.
Help us
seek and pay tribute to the good.
Help us replace the evil with the good.
Amen
