The First Step is Faith

“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Faith is never easy.  Stepping out is hard.  It takes courage to step out of our comfort zone.  Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on the water toward Jesus, but his faith faltered, and he began to sink (Matt 14: 28 – 33).  Thomas will forever be remembered as “Doubting Thomas” for refusing to believe in the Lord’s resurrection unless he could see and touch His wounds (John 20: 24 – 31).

Faith seems to be at a low point in our society today.  People want proof just as Thomas did.  They believe virtually anything posted on the internet but refuse to accept the word of God.  Jesus foresaw this when He said, “And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18: 8).  Mankind places faith in earthly things rather than the Lord.

Our churches, in many cases, have too many empty pews.  Nones, those who claim no religious affiliation seems to be the fastest growing religion.  Though there are miracles occurring every day many ignore them or call them luck or coincidence.

Without faith in God there is no hope; without hope there is no joy; without joy we offend God who loves us and wants our joy and happiness.  If faith is lost, all is lost.

Father You work miracles every day.
Help us see them as they are.
Give us the gift of faith.
Our faith will lead us to You.

Amen
